Transitions into High School
High School Graduation Coach Initiative
Source: Georgia Department of Education Date: 2007
The High School Graduation Coach initiative, the first statewide program of its kind, allows each of Georgia’s high schools to employ a graduation coach. The coach’s primary responsibility is to identify at-risk students and keep them academically on-track before they consider dropping out.

This Web page features a number of PowerPoint presentations that address the challenge of raising graduation rates and some strategies for doing so, including easing transitions into high school, developing a mentoring program, and supporting special needs students. Many of these presentations can be adapted by other states to help their own efforts to raise graduation rates.

The site also includes links to resources related to national efforts to increase graduation rates, as well as information on the most recent data available for the state's graduation rates. States will find this site a useful model for their own efforts to educate the public about graduation rates and the steps that can be taken to increase them.

Background and Context
Students are most at risk of dropping out during their first year of high school.  Initiatives like ninth grade academies, smaller learning communities, advisory systems, and individual learning plans can serve to personalize a student’s transition into high school and better equip them to face the new challenges that arise during that time.
