State Superintendent’s High School Task Force Report

The Wisconsin State Superintendent convened a statewide High School Task Force in February 2005. The Task Force was charged with ensuring the state's high school students aregraduating with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in postsecondary education, the workplace, and as citizens of our 21st century global society. The report provides a summary of the mission, research, and proceedings of the Task Force. It also provides four broad recommendations with accompanying strategies to raise achievement, close the achievement gap, and promote postsecondary success and good citizenship for all students.

Background and Context
Providing leadership across a state's vast education system is a daunting challenge. In an era of increased accountability, the state's role is even more central to the teaching that takes place in each classroom throughout the state. Whether through the establishment and improvement of state data systems, or shifting the internal organization of the agency, states are undertaking a variety of efforts to provide stronger leadership.
