Postsecondary Transitions
Oregon High School Diploma
Source: Oregon Department of Education Date: 2007
The Oregon Department of Education hosts on its website a web portal devoted entirely to the new Oregon High School Diploma. This web portal contains a mass of information including: background on the project; superintendent updates; a video presentation; public survey results; support materials for community discussion meetings; frequently asked questions; and an interactive map organizing feedback from communities around the state. This web portal also links to the www.getreadyoregon.org website, which provides a simplified interface for the public to learn more about the new requirements and what they can do to help ensure their children are prepared. This method of organizing information is an excellent example of a transparent, inclusive and open effort to develop a new diploma that, when completed, should empower Oregon’s students to be college and workforce ready.

Background and Context
In many states, recent legislation or gubernatorial priorities have focused attention on increasing access for high school students to post-secondary options. Small learning communities, advisory systems, individual learning plans, AP and IB classes, dual enrollment programs, exit exams, and the push to increase rigor of high school classes and graduation requirements are approaches states use to guide students through graduation and help them make successful transitions into college.
