This PowerPoint presentation discusses the importance of the Career Clusters framework for education and for the economy of South Carolina. Career Clusters can be used to balance student interests and skills with district capacity and with the recognized needs of employers. The presentation then looks specifically at several clusters, identifying the number and type of jobs found within these clusters with respect to the economy of South Carolina. The presentation suggests that the Career Clusters framework can be used to guide students into career pathways that will meet employer needs for the state. Other state education authorities may wish to follow this model to align educational opportunities with their states’ economic needs.

Background and Context
In many states, recent legislation or gubernatorial priorities have focused attention on increasing access for high school students to post-secondary options. Small learning communities, advisory systems, individual learning plans, AP and IB classes, dual enrollment programs, exit exams, and the push to increase rigor of high school classes and graduation requirements are approaches states use to guide students through graduation and help them make successful transitions into college.
