Postsecondary Transitions
College Professor Study on Preparedness of High School Seniors for College
Source: Arkansas Department of Education Date: 2006
This study invited thirty-three colleges and universities to participate in an internet survey seeking opinions from professors who teach freshman-level courses about preparedness of high school graduates for college. The results from the respondents were critical and reveal that they are clearly unsatisfied with the job that high schools are doing in preparing students, particularly in mathematics, writing and study habits. The study also reveals recommendations on areas of improvement provided by the respondents.

Background and Context
In many states, recent legislation or gubernatorial priorities have focused attention on increasing access for high school students to post-secondary options. Small learning communities, advisory systems, individual learning plans, AP and IB classes, dual enrollment programs, exit exams, and the push to increase rigor of high school classes and graduation requirements are approaches states use to guide students through graduation and help them make successful transitions into college.
