Postsecondary Transitions
The Role of High School Guidance in Raising Student Acheivement
Source: Indiana Department of Education Date: 2006
This resource details proposals for dealing with the shortage of counselors in Indiana's schools. It cites research that shows guidance counselors have a profound impact on student achievement. However, the numbers of counselors is severely limited in Indiana, and there is no sign that the resources needed to hire more of them will be provided. Accordingly, the authors propose reseach-based studies to test out less costly solutions that may allow Indiana's current guidance counselors to utilize their time more effectively.

Background and Context
In many states, recent legislation or gubernatorial priorities have focused attention on increasing access for high school students to post-secondary options. Small learning communities, advisory systems, individual learning plans, AP and IB classes, dual enrollment programs, exit exams, and the push to increase rigor of high school classes and graduation requirements are approaches states use to guide students through graduation and help them make successful transitions into college.
