Postsecondary Transitions
Ohio College Tech Prep
Source: Ohio Board of Regents and the Ohio Department of Education Date: 2007
Ohio’s College Tech Prep (CTP) initiative is designed to support students through a smoothly structured transition from high school, to college, to high skill and high demand technical employment. It does this through a collaborative network that supports blended programs of college prep academics and technology career education that are offered in a variety of settings including career centers, high schools, and colleges throughout Ohio.

The unique core of College Tech Prep is the pathway—a sequential course of study that includes at least two years of high school and two years of college education. Each pathway leads to an associate or bachelor’s degree or postsecondary certification and high tech employment. The website spotlights specific programs and students and includes postsecondary and dual enrollment data. This initiative may be used as an example to other state education agencies wishing to develop programs to foster successful postsecondary transitions for high school students.

Background and Context
In many states, recent legislation or gubernatorial priorities have focused attention on increasing access for high school students to post-secondary options. Small learning communities, advisory systems, individual learning plans, AP and IB classes, dual enrollment programs, exit exams, and the push to increase rigor of high school classes and graduation requirements are approaches states use to guide students through graduation and help them make successful transitions into college.
