Regional & National Organizations

There is a wealth of information about secondary school redesign available from organizations that operate on both the national and regional level.  These organizations complement state efforts by providing data, case studies, and tools that can be used when formulating and implementing policies designed to facilitate secondary school redesign. 

Achieve, Inc.
Achieve, Inc. is a partnership between the nation's governors and business leaders that focuses on raising academic standards and increasing students' readiness for college, work and citizenship.
Achieve's American Diploma Project Network
Achieve's American Diploma Project Network is a network of 30 states that are working to improve college readiness for their students. This site includes state action plans, policy recommendations, and research on high school graduation issues.

Achieve's State Profiles Overview provides snapshots of state efforts to address high school improvement issues.
Alliance for Excellent Education
The Alliance for Excellent Education promotes high school transformation and provides a variety of reports and resources that focus on a number of topics including literacy, small learning communities, and postsecondary preparation.
American Youth Policy Forum
The American Youth Policy Forum is a nonprofit, nonpartisan professional development organization that provides learning opportunities for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers working on youth and education issues at the national, state, and local levels.   
Comprehensive Centers Program
The U.S. Department of Education’s Comprehensive Centers Program supports 21 comprehensive technical assistance centers that provide training and professional development in reading, mathematics, and technology, particularly to low-performing districts and schools. Early College High School Initiative
The Early College High School Initiative, a project of 13 partner organizations supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and coordinated by Jobs for the Future, provides support for and information on early college initiatives. Through the initiative, the partners will eventually open hundreds of small schools across the country.
Education Commission of the States
The Education Commission of the States provides data, research, analysis, and leadership to help states develop effective policy and practice for public education. Its website houses databases, 50-state information, and issue briefs on a broad range of education topics.

ECS's Education Issues Database provides overviews of a wide variety of issues facing educators at the elementary and secondary level.
ECS's High School Topics Database 
ECS's High School Topics Database provides state profiles and national reports on topics related to high school education, including graduation rates, exit exams, assessment, and college-readiness standards. 
ECS's StateNotes and Online Database
ECS's StateNotes and Online Database is a clearinghouse of state education information, including analysis of State of the State addresses and recent policy initiatives. 
Jobs for the Future
Jobs for the Future is a nonprofit research, consulting, and advocacy organization with a strong focus on facilitating successful student transitions from high school to postsecondary education and work. 
National Governors Association
The National Governors Association is the bipartisan organization of the nation's governors, which promotes visionary state leadership, shares best practices, and provides policy recommendations. 
NGA's Center for Education Best Practices
NGA's Center for Education Best Practices provides information on best practices in early childhood, elementary and secondary, and postsecondary education. It addresses topics such as teacher quality, high school redesign, reading, extra learning opportunities, and readiness. 
NGA's Honor States Grant Program 
NGA's Honor States Grant Program is a governor-led initiative to improve high school and college-ready graduation rates in 26 states. Phase I of the grant offers governors the opportunity to develop and implement comprehensive plans to improve high school graduation and college readiness rates. Phase II grants focus on state work in more specific areas such as adding rigor, expanding AP participation, and improving low performing high schools. This site provides links to NGA’s Action Agenda, Honoring Progress newsletters, and other high school information. 
NGA's Chairman's Initiative on High School Redesign
The  NGA's Chairman's Initiative on High School Redesign was undertaken by Gov. Mark Warner in 2004 to address the dropout crises, and includes a five-point state action agenda for high school redesign and a list of 10 Steps for getting started on this agenda. 
National High School Alliance
The National High School Alliance is a partnership of almost 50 organizations that are committed to promoting the success of high school youth. The resource section of its website includes research, recommended strategies, and information for practitioners and policymakers organized by the following categories: empowered educators; accountable leaders; integrated system of high standards, curriculum, instruction, assessments, and support; engaged community and youth; academic engagement of all students; and personalized learning environments.
National Youth Employment Coalition
The National Youth Employment Coalition is made up of over 285 organizations working to ensure youth receive the full range of educational, developmental, vocational, economic and social opportunities, supports, and services they may need to become a productive and self-sufficient worker, taxpayer, parent, and citizen. The site provides policy and analysis of current issues in youth development.
Pathways to College Network
Pathways to College Network is a national alliance of organizations committed to using research-based knowledge to improve postsecondary education access and success for the nation’s underserved students. This site provides a variety of resources focusing on the challenges facing students making the transition into college and strategies to overcome them.
Regional Educational Laboratories
The Regional Educational Laboratories are a network of ten laboratories that serve the educational needs of a designated region by providing access to high quality scientifically valid education research through applied research and development projects, studies, and other related technical assistance activities. 
Southern Regional Education Board
The Southern Regional Education Board is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that helps government and education leaders in its 16 member states work together to advance education and improve the social and economic life of the region. SREB assists state leaders by directing attention to key education issues; collecting, compiling and analyzing comparable data on P-20 education; and sharing its analyses of actions and issues that help states and institutions form long-range plans and policies. 
U.S. Department of Education High School Initiative
The U.S. Department of Education High School Initiative is designed to equip state and local education leaders with current knowledge about high schools through special forums, print and electronic materials, and targeted technical assistance.  The site includes resources related to adolescent literacy, STEM education, noteworthy practices, accountability and data, and other areas related to secondary school redesign.
