The Colorado Department of Education’s Personal Learning Profile project website contains materials to aid in establishing individual learning plans for students. These materials consist of a pre-test, series of lesson plans, and a template for an individual student learning profile. These materials are designed to help students identify their personal strengths and challenges, set goals for their future, and learn to communicate their educational, social, communicative and physical needs to educators, family members or other support personnel. These materials can be used by educators, community service personnel, family members or anyone interested in supporting students to learning skills necessary to advocate for themselves.

Background and Context
Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) are personalized student education plans that include information such as high school courses, post- secondary education and career interests, and extracurricular activities.  State approaches to developing and implementing ILPs are as varied as the information that goes into them. But even with those differences, common purposes and similar challenges drive states to require their students to complete ILPs.
