High School! A Best Practice Periodical
Source: California Department of Education Date: 2007
This best practice periodical for educators, High School!, is produced by the Middle and High School Improvement Office at the California Department of Education. The primary objective of the periodical is to highlight issues, research, and resources pertinent to high school grades; focus on best practices and strategies of high schools; and showcase schools that are working toward a goal of high performance. The last issue included articles about the civic literacy and mission of schools, libraries in the 21st century, the relevance of counseling, and spotlights two schools’ learning experiences. The publication’s website archives previous issues and allows for individuals to join the High School! e-mail distribution list.

This could be a model for states that want to disseminate high school best practices to their local districts and schools.

Background and Context
Educational transformation requires changes at the state, district, school, and classroom levels. By supporting districts in their secondary school redesign efforts, state education agencies must not only provide direction, but also gain a deeper knowledge of the processes of redesign by learning from the experiences of individual districts. This in turn will facilitate stronger state leadership in support of future efforts.
