District Leadership Action
Connected Learning Communities: A Toolkit for Reinventing High School
Source: Jobs for the Future Date: 2007
This toolkit helps schools and communities encourage learning that takes place beyond the traditional classroom; foster classroom learning that requires the application of knowledge to real problems and situations; and recognize that student motivation, engagement, and their academic achievements and future prospects depend on real-world connections. The goals of a connected and community-based learning system are to improve personalized learning, help students recognize what they learn in school is applicable to the outside world, provide help for students transitioning to adulthood, and improve the rigor of high school coursework. These tools are designed for teacher leaders, coaches, and other professionals who support the work of school practitioners.

Some are more directed to community partners, whose work on community-connected learning occurs outside of the school building. This toolkit will be useful for states that want to support district and school redesign that maximizes community learning.

Background and Context
Educational transformation requires changes at the state, district, school, and classroom levels. By supporting districts in their secondary school redesign efforts, state education agencies must not only provide direction, but also gain a deeper knowledge of the processes of redesign by learning from the experiences of individual districts. This in turn will facilitate stronger state leadership in support of future efforts.
