In August 2006, the Oregon Department of Education hosted the Strategies for Student Success Summer Institute. Over 800 Oregon educators worked together to identify strategies; learn from experts about a variety of topics central to adolescent literacy, student success, and school improvement; and developed literacy plans for 2006-07. Through the webpage for the summit, educators and policymakers from across the country can watch video streams of the speakers, view PowerPoint presentations, and read summaries of the sessions. The link to the planning tools will also help state and district leaders to replicate similar institutes in their state or district.

Background and Context
Across the country states are struggling to establish sound literacy learning standards for adolescents and appropriate teacher preparation standards in literacy for teachers who will work with adolescents. At the secondary level, literacy should not only be addressed in the language arts curriculum, but it should play a central role in every subject area.
